Lead/Copper Testing
The Hampden Water District, in compliance with the EPA and the Maine Drinking Water program, tests 40 homes across the town of Hampden twice a year to test for lead and copper in the water. When the water sits in the pipes for long durations of time lead from the solder leaches in to the water. That is the lead that we are testing for in our samples. It comes from the pipes in the home, not from the water source. Lead has not been detected at the entrance to the distribution system. In an effort to combat this problem the Bangor Water District has been adding soda ash to stabilize the pH and give the water alkalinity. Since the addition of soda ash our lead testing results have gone from 80 ppb (parts per billion) in January of 2006 to 29 ppb in January of 2009. Our new Pump Station / Treatment Facility will be put into operation in the spring of 2010. This facility will allow us to add additional soda ash upon entry into our system to farther combat the excessive lead levels in some homes. For more information regarding lead/copper testing please check out the EPA link, or feel free to contact us at the office.
Flushing Notice
The staff and Trustees at the
Hampden Water District appreciate your patience and understanding during this
time.
You may notice hydrants
opened for an extended period of time as we follow through with our flushing
program. Opening the hydrant draws water through the main at a faster then usual
speed, allowing any sediment to be flushed away. The sediment is soda ash,
another form of baking soda (used to reduce corrosion) and corrosion products
associated with pipe (such as iron). Please be aware you may experience some
discoloration, but this will settle out and is always safe to drink! We attempt
to schedule flushing in a manner that minimizes customer disruptions, some
customers may experience reduced water pressure during these times.
