Lead/Copper Testing
The Hampden Water District, in compliance with the EPA and the Maine Drinking Water program, tests 40 homes across the town of Hampden twice a year to test for lead and copper in the water. The homes tested are tier one, which include houses that were built between 1982 and 1987 and used 50/50 lead solder in the plumbing. When the water sits in the pipes for long durations of time lead from the solder leaches in to the water. That is the lead that we are testing for in our samples. It comes from the pipes in the home, not from the water source. In an effort to combat this problem the Bangor Water District has been adding soda ash to stabilize the pH and give the water alkalinity. Since the addition of soda ash our lead testing results have gone from 80 ppb (parts per billion) in January of 2006 to 29 ppb in January of 2009. This is a significant decrease that we anticipate to continue. For more information regarding lead/copper testing please check out the EPA link, or feel free to contact us at the office.
